When I was a little girl I had a plethora of Barbie Dolls in every different clothes styles; however they all look the same. Tall and Skinny. When you are little you do not understand the concept of body image, yet these organization are surrounding you with one form of beauty and you never get a well- rounded idea of all the different types of beauty. Growing up and accepting my body was is impossible and still impossible today. I am not saying that Barbie is the sole reason that girls are lacking in self esteem, but they are making a significant change. In the start of 2016, Mattel released that they are changing the look of Barbie. They have added 3 new body shapes and incorporated many more different hair and skin color. Their campaign " Imagine the Possibilities" is focused on letting girls imagine all the different roles and jobs that can have no matter what they look like. However, I am concerned of their true intentions for changing Barbie. Studies have shown that Barbie's profits were dropping drastically and after the evolutions the company began to skyrocket. So, did Barbie change for the children or for the profits? I would like to think that they changed for the self image that the dolls are portraying to the girls. The younger that girls are to learn that they do not have to be a certain size to be beautiful with help with their self- esteem when they are older. Self Image is finally becoming a topic of discussion. By the age of 13, 1 out of 4 girls have been clinically diagnosed with depression, eating disorders, or mental disorders. This is something that needs to change immediately, when girls are raised of realistic body image the sooner this issue with me resolved.
