Living Cell Phoneless

All semester we have discussed the pros and cons of technology ( mostly the cons) and for my final blog I wanted to write about someone who took initiative to eliminate the addiction. CNN tech write, Hope King, wrote about how her iPhone was stolen in NYC and she wanted to prove the thief that her phone is not essential to her daily success. Little did she know that it was harder to adjust than she thought.
King said that she carried her iPad around which was the only way she could make her phoneless life doable. One of the most annoying aspects of not having her phone was the fact that she had to borrow everyone else's phone from her boss to the cab driver. King lasted for 135 day without having her phone and in result she learned a few things from this experiment.
1. American is far too dependent on smartphones. She researched that the average American spends over 3 hours on their phone a day. This is terrifying. We spend more time interacting with our screens than people.
2. It is basically impossible to live without any form of technology in America.
3. There is a sense of freedom and accomplishment to know that you are not bound the chains of technology.
4. King says," We only gain convenience. The cost of this convenience is a short tether that chains us to this one device, and deprives us of two basic survival skills -- courage and resourcefulness."
I think that King;'s challenge was inspirational. It is extremely hard or basically impossible to drop all technology, but I do think that everyone should try to limit their technology use. For example, maybe going a week without any social media or only calling people. There are a variety of ways that we can limit our technology use, but we must make the decision to do so.
